While the unemployment rate in Romania is relatively low, fluctuating between 3.5% and 5%, the Jiu Valley has a relatively high unemployment rate, of around 13%, indicating the presence of excess labor force. The unemployment rate also varies quite a bit, from a high 18% in Uricani, to a more modest 11% in Petroșani. It is also important to notice that the share of the active population is relatively low (around 40% of the population captured in the 2011 Census), indicating the presence of excess labor force that is not captured in unemployment figures.
